2015-16 Panini Donruss: Jokic's Rated Rookie (and Why There's No Optic Rookie)
2015-16 Donruss gave Nikola Jokic his Rated Rookie at #215 plus a The Rookies insert at #43 — the accessible entry into his rookie class. Donruss Optic did not include him until 2016-17, so no Optic Jokic rookie exists. Here's what to buy and how.

If Prizm is the flagship stop on a Nikola Jokic rookie build, 2015-16 Panini Donruss is the one that makes the chase accessible. It gave him the most recognizable rookie label in the hobby — the Rated Rookie, at #215 — plus a second rookie card in the The Rookies insert at #43, and a signed rookie in Signature Series #56.
It is also the set that trips people up, because of the card that isn’t here.
There is no 2015-16 Donruss Optic Jokic
Donruss Optic is the chrome twin of flagship Donruss, and for most modern rookies the Optic Rated Rookie is the version collectors chase. Jokic does not have one.
Optic did not include him in 2015-16. His first Optic card is 2016-17 Donruss Optic #90 — a second-year card with no RC designation, from the season after his rookie year. It is a good-looking, inexpensive Jokic card. It is not a rookie, and it should never be priced as one.
If a listing offers an “Optic Jokic rookie”, check the year on the card. It is either a 2016-17-or-later Optic, or the title is padded with keywords.
What Donruss actually holds for Jokic collectors
- #215 — Rated Rookie (base). The headline card: a true 2015-16 rookie-year card with the Rated Rookie logo and the Panini RC shield. The friendliest way to own a genuine Jokic rookie.
- #43 — The Rookies (insert). A second rookie-year card from the same product, on the set’s dedicated rookie insert design.
- #56 — Signature Series. The signed Donruss rookie, and one of the two mainstream signed options in his whole class alongside Select Die-Cut Rookie Autographs (#38, /60) — see the rundown of his real signed rookies.
- Press Proof and other parallels layer over the base card, so the same Rated Rookie exists at several tiers of scarcity.
- Because Jokic was a second-round pick (41st overall, 2014) whom nobody projected as a three-time MVP, 2015-16 base rookies like this one were opened casually and handled hard — which is why high-grade copies are scarcer than the print run suggests.
As always, we don’t publish print runs or fixed prices here — those move constantly, and the live eBay rails across the site show exactly what these cards are trading for right now.
How to approach the Donruss chase
- Start with the paper Rated Rookie (#215). If you want an affordable, iconic Jokic rookie, this is the natural first buy.
- Add The Rookies (#43) if you want a second rookie-year card from the same set for very little extra.
- Confirm the card number, not just the brand. “Donruss Jokic rookie” covers two different cards, and later-year Donruss and Optic cards get described the same way.
- Condition is most of the value. For a heavily-printed paper base card, the gap between an ordinary copy and a gem copy is nearly the whole price. Measure the borders with the card centering tool before you get excited, and run the grading ROI calculator before you submit.
- Watch sold comps, not asking prices. The sold record is the honest signal for where any tier is trading.
Buying it safely
For the base paper Rated Rookie, low-grade raw is a fine, budget-friendly buy. For numbered parallels, high grades, or the Signature Series auto, buy graded so authenticity and condition are both guaranteed — Jokic’s premium rookies and autographs attract counterfeits — and always compare against sold eBay comps rather than the lowest asking price.
